The Liquid gas carriers being repaired at Brest in France have never ceased to fascinate me by their extraordinary colour and size since I discovered the dry docks there in 1996.

A painting done for the 120th anniversary of the tall ship Belem that was chosen for the cover of a coffee table book “Hommage au Belem” published by Gallimard, celebrating the ships life and adventures : cover photo of the book below.

The study for the final canvas was painted at Kristiansand in Norway whilst on my journey to the far North aboard the schooner Etoile.
